“Listen to the silence, it has so much to say”~ Rumi

In a world full of continual distraction, it’s becoming increasingly more difficult to tune out all the noise and connect to self. Meditation is the often prescribed way in.

If you are new to mindfulness/ meditation and do not know where to start ? Or If the thought of sitting and meditating is too much to bear, start by simply committing to a period of silence for a few minutes every day.

Here’s four ways to easily incorporate silence without feeling overwhelmed by the idea:

1.Start your day with silence

Start with sitting in silence every morning for few minutes, you could sit on floor or on your comfortable chair or even couch, just insure that your feet are touching the floor and back is straight.

Close eyes and sit for as long as it’s possible for you. You can consider setting timer of 10/15/20 minutes to avoid looking at the watch.

Bring your focus on your breath and when thoughts come by, allow them, don’t fight them. If some thoughts are weighing you down ,let them go.

At first you may find it hard, but over time you will appreciate silence.

  1. Take a walk

Enjoy some quiet time while walking. Ditch the music, your favourite podcast or whatever you are used to listening, best is to just simply leave your phone behind. The less you hear, the more settled your mind can become.

  1. Be in Nature

If sitting in silence or walking without music does not appeal to you, go down to the beach and sit on the water’s edge and just watch the waves or sit or lie on the grass under the trees and watch the movement of the leaves or the clouds.
This is a great way to connect with silence without putting up a fight with it.

  1. Combine silence with Gratitude

At the end of every day sit in silence and ask yourself what am I grateful for. You’ll be amazed at the blessings you discover.

Whatever practice you’re drawn to, the quiet it generates can fill any abyss. Silence can be your friend and your teacher. Silence isn’t empty, it’s full of answers you have been searching for.
