A Clear Case

I have always encouraged my kids to make handwritten cards and gifts on special occasions. We would do crafts, create something together. My belief has always been ,anyone can buy anything from the market. But when you put your thought into it, when you create something unique, something specially made for someone  it becomes memorable.

In my recent decluttering, I found one such gift.

My elder daughter was 9 old when she gifted me a phone cover. She took a clear case, printed one quote, and stuck it to the back. Simple. Thoughtful. Perfect.

But what impressed me the most was the quote she had selected.

“Respond to every call that excites your Spirit” ~Rumi

Think about it. A phone cover. A quote about responding to calls. On a phone. The wit, the awareness, the connection she made that was not a 9 year old’s thinking. That was far beyond her age.

And the quote itself. She wasn’t just picking something beautiful. She was picking something she felt will appeal to me. At 9. She could see me that clearly.

That little phone cover is long gone now. But the quote never left. It found its way from the back of a phone case into the way I make decisions, the way I say yes, the way I choose. Funny how the most defining philosophies of our lives don’t always come from books or teachers or great moments. Sometimes they come from a 9 year old with a printer and a clear case.
